TACONIC AND GREEN REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDY

April 2023

The Taconic and Green Regional School District (T&G) is exploring the formation of one middle school for its students in grades 6-8. Currently, these students are educated in three PK/K-8 buildings.

This configuration limits opportunities for students, places added demands on instructors and creates operational challenges to administrators. These challenges are outlined in the Superintendent Assessment of Regional Middle School Need - June 2022, that is listed below. A single middle school was originally discussed during the district merger process and the Board has known the community would formally explore the possibility once the District was formed and operating.

In the spring of 2022, Superintendent Dr. Randi Lowe assembled a group of teachers, parents, community members, and board members to complete three primary tasks:

  • Determine if it is possible to reconfigure current T&G schools to create a middle school and project the anticipated costs associated with this decision

  • Review the comments and data collected from the survey to have an understanding of some of the initial thoughts of our community members regarding middle school programming

  • Develop a plan for, and initiate community engagement on this topic

This committee provided a report to the T&G Board in October 2022 recommending they continue the discussion of forming a middle school, which the Board unanimously approved.

This website contains documents and artifacts of the work to date and will continue to be updated as future work occurs. We encourage you to review these documents and continue to check back to see updates of meetings and actions taken.

At this time, the T&G community is participating in an Educational Visioning process. David Stephen, from New Vista Design, facilitates work sessions to find out what educators, parents, and community members are looking for in a middle school experience for our students. Participants provide input regarding educational, architectural, and design patterns, identifying those that are of greatest importance. The feedback from all groups will be reviewed and compared to our current program to guide our next steps.

Dr. Lowe plans on making a formal recommendation to the T&G Board in June regarding future planning. At this time, the Board will determine if they will move forward with the project.  We encourage members of the community to join this meeting to hear the discussion.
